As we glide into winter I wonder: will it be a repeat of last year's prolonged icy grip, or will it be an extended period of wet and flabby days? Although there were casualties last winter we 'came through' relatively unscathed. Losses, predictably, included several ceanothus, a hebe or two, and a pittosporum — each, admittedly, somewhat badly sited in open ground without the protection of south-facing walls. Remarkably — there's always a silver lining — a newly-planted juvenile (two-foot-high) Cornus florida was unaffected.
