摘要

It is with a tremendous sense of satisfaction that I am stepping down as editor-in-chief (EIC) of Human Gene Therapy and passing the baton to my friend and colleague Terry Flotte. I took over as EIC in 2003 at a very challenging time when support for the field was eroding. Early expectations for clinical success were not realized and several widely publicized adverse events fueled safety concerns. The field needed a more robust foundation of science that was emerging from a small number of academic laboratories that were primarily supported by governments and foundations.
