Two field trials were carried out at El-Mattana Research Station, Qena Governorate. in 1998 and 1999 seasons. The study included three irrigation systems (drip, developed surface, and traditional surface irrigation systems), three N levels (50, 75 and 100 kg N/fed) and three sweet sorghum varieties viz. Tracy, Rix and Brands. The aim of this work was to find out the effective irrigation system, N-level and the best variety of sweet sorghum characterized with the highest yield and quality under Upper Egypt conditions. The results showed that average water consumptive use reached (1940 and 1876), (2653 and 2570) and (3500 and 3420) m~3/fed for drip, developed surface, and traditional surface irrigation system in the 1st and 2nd season, respectively.Irrigation systems significantly affected forage yield. Drip irrigation achieved the highest stalk yield compared to the other two systems. However, the differences were not significant. The highest sucrose and purity percentages were significantly obtained under drip irrigation system. Increasing the applied N-dose significantly increased forage and stalk yields. Applying the highest N-level caused a significant reduction in sucrose and purity percentages. There were no significant differences among sweet sorghum varieties in stalk yield and purity percentage in both seasons and forage yield in the 2nd one while they were significantly differed in sucrose percentage in both seasons and forage yield in the 1st one. The results suggested that any of the tested varieties could he successfully planted under Upper Egypt conditions.
