摘要

The Walker River in Nevada, faces the same situation as other rivers in the American west. The demand for water is constantly increasing and conflict arises based upon who should have the right of use. Policy makers and individual water right owners need to understand the lifestyles, customs, and cultures within given communities affected by water use in the Walker River Basin. This study sought to provide insight and direction to those individuals, government entities and agencies currently dealingwith the basin's water needs and to help them as they struggle for consensus on this difficult issue. Despite years of conflict over entrenched positions concerning the issues examined, this study indicates that there is reason for optimism. While thereare still several issues where clear differences were reported, there were also several areas where agreement was reported. The challenge for policy makers is to take the information and see where compromises and alternatives to the present situation maybe reached.
