Water Allocation to Citrus Trees Based on Age and Stem Collar Circumference for Trickle Irrigation Systems

Percentage of shaded area is a criterion used in estimating plant water demand used in trickle irrigation system. Accuracy in determining this parameter will, therefore, lead to accuracy in irrigation planning. The present study was conducted to determine the correlations between shaded area and water demand in citrus trees using the tree characteristics of age and stem collar circumference. For this purposes, 53 citrus orchards located in the eastern pail of Mazandaran Province in northern Iran wereselected. In each orchard, an average number of 20 trees with age ranges of 1 to 15 years were selected for measurements. In addition to the stem collar circumference, the shaded area of each tree was determined using the triangulation method and the actual discharge system was measured over three irrigation period in peak consumption months. Based on the measurements, the best relationships among tree shaded area, stem collar circumference, and tree age were developed. The relationships between waterdemand and tree age and stem collar circumference, for common plant spacing practices and the local soils, were also extracted. Evaluation of the proposed relationships was accomplished by comparing water demand estimations for each tree age obtained from these relations with both the reported values by designers and actual dripper discharge measurements. The results showed that the water demand by trees under the age of 8 years is far lower then the current operating conditions or the design conditionswhile the water demand by trees older than 12 is far higher. For trees of 1 and 15 years old, the differences were estimated at 2% and 142%, respectively, as compared to the current operating conditions and at 2% and 115% compared to design recommendations for the local orchards.
