Evaluation of three temperature based empirical models for computing reference evapotranspiration (ETo): the Hargreaves (HARG), Behnke and Maxey (B-M) and the Jensen-Haise (J-N) models were tested for Umiam, Meghalaya considering the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith (FAO-56 PM) as standard model. The daily ETo calculated by the temperature-based models approach were compared regression analysis with those of the FAO-56 PM model. The results showed that daily ETo based on HARG estimation (RMSE=0.047, r =0.928)was found to be best followed by J-N (RMSE=0.054, r =0.911) and B-M (RMSE=0.050, r =0.680). Calibration of Hargreaves (HARG) equation is done by the adjustment of Hargeaves exponent (HE) a value of 0.450 instead of the original 0.5 to improve accuracy ofestimation. Estimates by Adjusted Hargreaves Model (AHARG) were found to be in close agreement with the FAO-56 PM. The Standard Error of Estimate (SEE) was reduced from 0.047 to 0.014. The average overestimation was about 1.75%. Results strongly supportthe use of the AHARG for Umiam (Meghalaya).
