The objective of this study was to examine whether it is possible to attain the reliable estimation of ET0 by Hargreaves equation (HG) for daily time step. This objective was reached by the evaluation of the reliability of HG equation as compared to the Penman-Monteith method (PM), which was used as a standard. The nine weather stations selected for this study are located in a semi-arid environment in the Khuzestan plain (in the South West of Iran). Results showed that the accuracy of the ET0 estimated by the original HG equation varied from one location to another. Calibration of the HG equation using simple linear regression did not improve the equation performance. Later, the HG equation was subsequently calibrated using a power regression as a function of windspeed. This second calibration method showed reliable results in all locations, with MBE ranging from -0.12 to 0.24 mm d-1 and RMSE from 0.49 to 0.76 mm d-1. Maxima under- and overestimation amounted to 3 and 4%, respectively. The results suggested that the daily ET0 could be computed relatively accurate using a windspeed based regression calibration of the HG equation, under the semiarid environment.
