Can linear potential theory predict supersonic jets?

摘要

Fifty years ago D.C. Pack presented his analytical series solution for a slightly over- or underexpanded supersonic jet emerging from a circular nozzle. However, non-uniform convergence, caused by singularities, makes direct numerical evaluation impossible. Therefore, Pack was unable to verify his solution, and during the following decades there was considerable doubt about its physical relevance. The present paper aims at answering the above question by a direct comparison of experimental Mach-Zehnder interferograms with corresponding theoretical images computed from Pack's analytical solution.
