Shaped distributed piezoelectric sensors: Theory and experimental verification

摘要

This paper is concerned with flexural deformations of smart beams with distributed piezoelectric sensors. We solve the problem of finding proper sensor-shapes facilitating the interpretation of the sensor output as deflections or slopes. Within the context of the classical lamination theory, considering coupling between the mechanical and electrical fields, the sensor output is derived by an integral equation, however an expression for the structural deformations is found by applying the principle of virtual work. The comparison of these integral equations then supplies a solution of the sensor shaping problem. Sensorshapes for measuring beam deflections are verified in a series of experiments. A comparison to a laser based measuring system indicates excellent coincidence between the measurements and gives evidence for the validity of the proposed type of sensor. [References: None]
