Eight rare earth ruthenium phosphide carbides RRu2PC (R = Y, Ce, Sm, Gd-Er) and seven corresponding osmium compounds ROs2PC (R = Y, Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) were prepared by arc-melting of the elemental components. They crystallise with an orthorhombic structure (Cincin, Z = 4) first reported for DyFe2SiC. These are the first compounds of this structure type containing phosphorus instead of silicon. The crystal structures of the four compounds CeRu2PC, SmRu2PC, TbRu2PC, and GdOs2PC were refined from X-ray powder diffractometer data. The cell volumes indicate the cerium atoms to have mixed or intermediate +3/+4 valence.
