The reaction of dialkylindium chlorides with some hydrazine derivatives afforded adducts in which remarkably different structural motifs were realized. Equimolar quantities of dimethylindium chloride and phenylhydrazine yielded the monoadduct [Me2InCl.NH2NHC6H5] (1) the central indium atom of which is coordinated by the NH2 nitrogen atom of the ligand. I forms a dimer in the solid state via an In-Cl-In bridge. In contrast, the asymmetric cleavage of the indium halide was observed for the corresponding reaction with tert-butylhydrazine. The ionic compound [Me2InCl2](-)[Me2In(NH2NHCMe3)(2)](+) (3) was isolated, which has two NH2 groups attached to the indium atom of the cation. The same hydrazine gave an adduct 2 analogous to 1 when the sterically more shielded (Me3C)(2)InCl was employed. In contrast to 1, the di(tert-butyl) compound 2 remains monomeric in the solid state. An excess of Me2InCl yielded the product (Me2InCl)(4)[NH2N(H)C6H5](2) (4), in which part of the ladder structure of the indium starting compound comprising four formula units is stabilized by two terminal hydrazine ligands. Only few crystals were isolated of the corresponding adduct 5 with tert-butylhydrazine, which has a complicated three-dimensional solid state structure.
