Black, platelet like crystals of RhTeCl were obtained by chemical transport reaction. The crystal structure of this new chalkogenide halide of a platinum metal was determined at room temperature by single crystal X-ray diffrac tion on an ''Imaging-Plate''-diffractometer. Ln contradiction to other known chalkogenide halides of platinum metals RhTeCl crystallizes in a layer structure which is derivable from the CdI2-structure type and which can be refined in the monoclinic spacegroup Cm with the lattice constants a = 1298.81(24), b = 364.05(4), c = 665.28(13) pm, beta = 118.76(2)degrees.
