摘要

The 1st communication of this overall cattle breed comparison documents the milk production of the cows when fed without concentrates. The 2nd communication includes the fattening and slaughter performance of the bulls that were born from the dual-purpose Simmental and the Holstein Friesian dairy cows. Between 2001 and 2007, 31 Simmental and 26 Holstein Friesian bulls were fattened. The bulls were kept in groups of 5 to 8 animals in an open-front barn with bedding material strewn on a sloped floor. Beginning at a live weight of 150 kg, bulls were fattened to an average live weight of 660 and 565 kg for Simmentals and Holstein Friesians, respectively. The forage consisted of 80% corn silage and 20% grass silage (dry matter basis). Each bull was supplemented daily with 3 kg of concentrates which consisted of 68% grain, 30% rapeseed meal and 2% minerals, using an automatic feeder. The average daily gains were approximately 12% lower and the feed energy requirements per kg of live weight gain were about 8% higher in Holstein Friesian bulls as compared to Simmental bulls. Simmental bulls were also superior in almost all criteria of slaughter performance (P<0.01), which resulted in a 26% reduction of slaughter revenue from Holstein Friesian bulls as compared to Simmental bulls.
