A growth performance and carcass evaluation study was conducted to determine the suitability to replace mainly soybean meal, wheat and wheat bran by wheat dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in diets for grower-finisher pigs. Additionally, metabolic parameters of colon ammonia and blood plasma urea as indicator for protein fermentation as well as colon dry matter were determined. A total of 60 female crossbreed pigs [(Large White x German Land race) x Pietrain] were allotted in 12 pens of 5 animals each, according to litter and body weight (35.6 +/- 0.5 kg). Step by step soy bean meal, wheat and wheat bran were replaced by 0.0, 5.4, 10.8, 16.2, 21.6, and 27.0% DDGS, concomitantly soy bean meal and wheat bran were reduced up to 0% by increasing DDGS content. Concentrations of ME, standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lysine, SID Methionine, and SID Threonine were kept constant between the treatment groups. Pigs were slaughtered when the average body weight reached 113.0 +/- 0.2 kg. During slaughter procedure colon digesta and blood plasma were collected and data of carcass characteristics were determined. In the grower period average daily gain (ADG; approximately 850 g), average daily feed intake (ADFI; 2.47 kg) and feed conversion ratio (FCR; 2.88 kg/kg) did not differ by DDGS supplementation (P > 0.1). In the finisher period, the diet with the highest DDGS content (27%) reached lower ADG compared to treatment with 5.4% DDGS (-14.9%) (P < 0.05). ADFI was lowest in treatment with 10.8% DDGS (2.10 kg). Hence ADFI and FCR showed a non systematic effect (quadratic, P < 0.05) with rising DDGS content. For the entire fattening period, ADG, ADFI and FCR were similar among treatment groups. Over all, animals reached a high proficiency level (approximately 844 g ADG, 2.42 kg ADFI, 2.83 kg/kg FCR). Carcass measurements revealed differences for the parameters ham pH and lightness between treatment without (ham pH 6.4; lightness 68.2) and 16.2% DDGS (ham pH 5.9; lightness 58.3) (P < 0.05). Colon dry matter (DM) showed a linear increase from 22.7% to 24.1% DM affected by DDGS (linear, P < 0.0001). Colon NH3 as well as blood plasma urea were not affected by DDGS addition (approximately 18.2 mmol ammonia/kg and 3.40 mmol urea/L plasma).
