A study was conducted on an experimental farm of the Institute of Animal Science of the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy with dry in-calf and newly-calved cows. The trials indicated that 17.3% of beet pulp silage (on a dry substance basis) in the diets of dry in-calf cows had no negative effect on their physiological state, calving or the viability of newborn calves. Replacement of up to 30.3% compound feed with beet pulp silage in the diets of newly-calved cows did not reveal any effect of statistical significance on yields, fat or protein contents and quality of the milk. Fermentation of carbohydrates in the rumen of cows fed pulp silage was more active leading to a higher concentration of total volatile fatty acids and a higher ratio of acetic acid to both propionic and butyric acid.
