According to the World Health Organization (WHO; 1), pneumonia kills more children than any other illness—more than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined. Each year an estimated 2 million children less than 5 years of age die from pneumonia, accountingfor almost one in five under-5 deaths worldwide. The most common causes of these deaths are Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) and Haemophilus influenzae (Hi), especially Hi serotype b (Hib). Recently, the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Sp has increasedworldwide such that the effectiveness of preventive strategies including current and emergent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) has taken on a note of greater urgency.
