GPs and family physicians will play the key role not only in prevention and treatment but in providing information about influenza and the merits of vaccination. It is thus vital to incorporate their expertise and experience into national planning efforts--at every stage of the plan from its inception to its implementation. The current low levels of even the annual flu inoculations suggest that governments must get GP "buy-in" if even the basic vaccination recommendations are to be respected. From the frontline of disease control their concerns about distribution of medicines and the inadequate stocks of anti-virals and vaccines must be taken on board.Without this necessary buy-in doctors may find it difficult to balance their Hippocratic oath to treat all equally with the political necessity of treatment prioritisation.
