When research scientists at the animal health division of Pharmacia and Upjohn in Kalamazoo, Mich., started using dairy goats in their mastitis studies a few years ago they were a bit surprised by some of the results. They found that those goats responded differently to the mastitis infections than cows do. And what they saw could be an extremely useful lesson for goatkeepers. The animals under study were infected with Staphylococcus aureus mastitis organisms.
