Changes in the pulp content of sugar beet. Importance for sugar beet pulp amount and quality.

Sugar beet pulp chips are, besides molasses, a main by-product of sugarbeet processing. In Germany 1.7 million t of dried pulp is produced per year; 80% is dried and pressed into pellets. Pellets are easy to store and make a high quality fodder for ruminants. Pulp content is a key indicator for processing and can not be directly measured in the factory. Therefore, estimates of 4-4.5% pulp are used, based on data from the 1980s. Field research was conducted in 2006 and 2007 by the German Institute for Sugarbeet Research to investigate whether the pulp content in sugarbeet was variety-dependent and whether estimates needed updating since the 1980s. Four varieties, registered in 1964, 1987, 2002 and 2003, were used. The results showed that there were significant differences in pulp content among varieties with modern varieties having a pulp content closer to 4% while that of older ones was above 4.5%. Although pulp content varied from 2006 to 2007, the relative differences remained. In pot experiments, soil moisture content was verified as another significant factor with drier soils causing higher dry matter and pulp contents. The chemical composition in the fodder value of the pulp showed no significant differences among varieties, but cellulose and lignin were significantly higher in the Z-type (sugar type variety) listed in 2003 then in the E-type (yield type variety) listed in 2002. It is concluded that fodder value and digestibility are unchanged with new varieties, but that selection for sugar content has caused a reduction in pulp content.
