Small in size, but with a large array of uses, microfluidic droplets could becomethe reaction vessels of choice for a significant fraction of biological research sayYolanda Schaerli and Florian Hollfelder of the University of Cambridge, UK Contemporary biology increasinglydemands high-throughputexperiments. Only these canprovide the vast amounts ofinformation needed to study cellpopulations, and DNA, proteinand small molecule librariesappropriately. Practically, such a format should be highlyeconomical, consuming minimalamounts of reagent and operatingat the lowest cost per assay, whichmeans running experiments on themicroscale.
