The novel ligands 3 and 4 (i-Pr-Rucaphos, Cy-Rucaphos) react with (tmeda)PdMe2 yielding ethane and distinctly bent, trans-spanning bisphosphine chelated 14-electron palladium(0) species, which have been fully characterized, including single crystal X-ray diffraction. Pd(0) complexes (d~(10)) play an outstandingly important role as reactive intermediates in homogeneous catalysis, in particular in combination with phosphines or related ligands, presumably both as LPd(0) or L2Pd(0) species with 12 or 14 valence electrons (VEs). Due to their capability to activate e.g. carbon-heteroatom bonds as an initial step of many catalytic transformations, in particular of C-C and C-heteroatom coupling reactions, experimental and theoretical investigations of these compounds are of great interest.
