The EU aims to lessen its reliance on Russian gas, and it has many reasons to do so, namely the Ukraine gas crisis of 2009 that suspended gas supplies from Russia to Ukraine as well as supplies to other European countries. Independence from Russian natural gas is conceivable; however, eliminating it completely is unlikely, a recent Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) report observed.
