By means of a long-term experiment (1976- 1989) with the application of organic wastes in increasing rates the fate of lead and zinc both in topsoil and plants as well as their translocation behaviour are illustrated. The results reveal that the surplus of heavy metals in the topsoil after supply and output can be proven with a maximum error of logo. The accumulation leads to an increase of both Pb and Zn concentrations in cereals and, in case of Zn, to a moderate translocation into deeper soil layers. At last, strategies for a sustainable and environmentally sound recycling of organic wastes are derived from the experiments.
