The EPIC model(Erosion/Productivity Impact Calculator) was evaluated for its capacity to estimate groundwater recharge. Simulations were carried out between 1967 and 1990 on the Portneuf River watershed (359 km2) which is located south-west of Quebec, Canada. EPIC was used on 789 homogeneous zones of the watershed. These homogeneous zones were determined by soil utilization, soil texture, slope, and groundwater depth criteria. Drainage depths to the saturated zone, simulated by EPIC, were comparedto base flows at the watershed outlet. No calibration of EPIC was necessary to estimate groundwater recharge, except for a parameter that controlled soil water evaporation. For the 24-year study period, the mean difference between measured and simulateddrainage was 4.3%. Sandy textured areas, where potato fields are located, contributed mainly to groundwater recharge.
