There's an old adage saying 'there's no such thing as a free lunch' but looking at the specification of the new BMW 320d EfficientDynamics, this could well be a car to buck the trend. It's based on the best selling 320d SE model, features the same kit, is priced the same - yet it delivers an extra 7.5 miles for every gallon of fuel and the annual tax disc will cost ￡10 less after year one, as a result of its cleaner CO_2 emissions at 109g/km. If you're a business user, you'll pay three per cent less benefit in kind taxation for the cleaner car. So what are the downsides? Well there's 20bhp less power on tap, though maximum torque remains the same, and it's half a second slower to 62mph due in part to lengthened gear ratios. Oh, and it only manages a top speed of 143mph - three down on the 320d - so we're not talking big sacrifices here for the extra parsimony. One of its biggest shortcomings though is that BMW doesn't recommend the 320d EfficientDynamics for towing, so if you've got a caravan to pull along, you'll have to stick with the regular 320d SE. And in foreign markets, there's a choice of different trim levels, whereas here in the UK, we're stuck with just the one.
