The IMS 100 promises to be more than a new arrow in the quiver of power generation solutions from General Electric; it is shaping up as a principal new weapon in the arsenal It seems GE has just "supersized" the aero gas turbine business. The first production LMS100 was shipped from GE's Jacintoport, Texas, USA., facility in late November of last year to Basin Electric Power Cooperative in Groton, South Dakota, U.S.A., where it will be brought online in mid-2006 as a simple-cycle peak shaver to meet winter and summer demands. At an event marking this shipment, Rick Stewart, president of GE Energy's aeroderivative division, and Mike Reale, LMS100 platform manager for aircraft engines, took time to speak about the machine. Putting the LMS100 in perspective, Stewart said "This is a step change for where aero engines fit into the marketplace and so it is a step change for the whole business. Where we used to participate in perhaps 5-6% of the total market, that was pretty good participation. We didn't win all the time, but we did get to participate. We were very much output limited.
