摘要

The propulsion of small and medium-sized boats - be they private, commercial or navy vessels - has been developing for more than a century. It started with inboard engines running on gasoline. Later engines were diesel-fueled. Initially, the inboard engines drove fixed propellers. Today, the sterndrive combines inboard power with outboard drive. In the early years of the 20th century, outboard engines came into use. Today, they are popular, powerful and generally easier to service than inboard engines or sterndrives.
