There have been times in its 17-year history when our selection of Newsmaker of the Year has been essentially based on a single monumental event. A case in point was 2010, when Caterpillar spent roughly $8.6 billion to purchase mining heavyweight Bucyrus International. Yet there have been other years when the selection was the result of a near continuous parade of activities and events to the extent that when the next thing happened, the observer could only wonder, "Now what did they do?"
