Salt tolerance was evaluated in 3 newly registered triticale cultivars (Karma-2000, Presto, and Tatlcak-97). Germination percentage, seedling fresh and dry weights, and water uptake by the seeds of the 3 triticale cultivars were determined under various levels of salt (NaCl) stress, with electrical conductivities of 2.4, 4.2, 5.9, 7.7, 10.6 and 13.2 dS m-1. Roots and shoots were analysed for the uptake of Na+ and K+, whereas seeds were analysed for the uptake of Na+, K+ and Cl-. Increased NaCl level had significant effects on the mean germination time, but had no significant effect on the final germination percentage. Water uptake did not significantly vary with the salinity level. Salinity increased the accumulation of Na+, and reduced the K+ content of roots and shoots. The Na+ and Cl- contents of germinating seeds gradually increased, while the K+ content of germinating seeds diminished. Karma-2000 appeared to be more tolerant of salt stress than the other cultivars. It was concluded that the delay in germination was mainly due to greater Na+ accumulation in seeds rather than to osmotic stress in the triticale cultivars, and that NaCl had adverse effects on triticale seedling characters..
