摘要

Chemistry is the oldest of the experimental sciences, the hands-on, let's-try-this-and-see-what-happens science. From the beginning it has taken a practical, down-to-earth approach to making useful things-pigments, medicines, acids-while occasionally succumbing to philosophical flights of fancy, such as the pursuit of the philosophers' stone. But it was the grand narrative of material transformation embodied in the search for the philosophers' stone that provided inspiration to 17th- and 18th-century artists; to chemists, such as Robert Boyle of Boyle's law fame; and to the craftsmen and wannabe alchemists, such as the discoverers of phosphorus and porcelain.
