My grandmother on my father's side was born Helene Haber. She was Fritz Haber's younger half-sister. Chemists seem to run in the family. My father also was a chemist. So was I. During my career I did most of my research in the area of heterogeneous catalysis. I never made an invention as significant as the synthesis of ammonia from the elements, but I did a lot of work in amine chemistry. I am the inventor or coinventor on patents related to improved synthesis of aniline, methylamines, and the isomerism of toluidines and dimethylanilines. Sometimes I wonder if there is a gene for this specific area of research.
