摘要

We report a case of an elderly woman with diabetes mellitus wich suffered from weakness, lack of appetite and abdominal pain associated with a change of oral antidiabetic medication. Two weeks after the triggering incident the patient was admitted to hospital because of dyspnea, oli-guria and progressive loss of consciousness. Immediately after hospital admission life-threatening organ dysfunctions have been developed caused by a severe lactic acidosis. Inspite of intensive care therapy the patient could not be stabilized. She died of a therapy-refractory circulatory failure. This article describes pathophysiology and symptoms of metformin intoxication. In addition therapeutic options are discussed.
