Big nation, nano dream - the prospects of India's nanotech revolution.

In fact, India organized the world's first Nano-Economic Congress in Mumbai during March 2006 to explore the commercial development of nanotechnology, which indicates the country's target of tapping into the rapidly evolving technology. Like various other countries around the world, India has shown a keen interest in investing in nanotech R&D; for example, the Department of Science and Technology has invested USD 20 million between 2004 and 2008 to boost nanotech research in various laboratories. The Silicon Valley-based Tndia-Nano' platform promoted recently by overseas Indians further supports the strategic alliances for nanotech development. Above all, India has positioned itself nicely to have a key role in the nanotech global market with its own market expectations worth USD 1 trillion by 2015. In fact, the number of patents filed in India's nanotech field has actually been increasing, mainly from 2003 to 2004 (Fig. 1), with nanoparticles and nanotubes accounting for 74% (Fig. 2).
