New emission regulations require innovation in engine air loop. To satisfy these requirements, new architectures of cooling systems are in process of development. These systems use valves to regulate the exhaust gases pressure and distribution in the cooling loop and combustion chamber. Since lower pressure is involved in the Exhaust Gas Recycling (EGR), Water Charge Air Cooler (WCAC) or Air Charge Air Cooler (ACAC), the condensation of exhaust gases takes place and very acidic solutions are generated. In absence of such new architecture of cooling system in service and in order to evaluate the corrosion risk that the acidic solutions from exhaust gases condensates could create in the EGR system, several tests have been proposed as representatives for simulation of service conditions. A new bench test was developed to provide an evaluation of the corrosion resistance using the pressure, flow rate, temperature and composition of the condensates corresponding to the identified parameters of service. Descriptions and discussion of the tests protocol and results are included in the presentation. The aim of this paper is to present the functionality of the test bench, the test results and perspectives to improve the corrosion resistance of the heat exchanger components.
