Worldwide demand for paint and coatings is predicted to rise 5.4% per year to 45.6 million metric tons in 2015. According to the World Paint & Coatings study released by The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm, rapid gains are expected to occur in the Asia/Pacific region, while more modest demand increases will be seen in Japan, North America, and Western Europe. Advances will be driven by a strong acceleration in world building construction, particularly residential construction, which is expected to rebound in North America and Western Europe. Additional trends that are predicted to fuel the rise in demand are increases in global manufacturing activity for coatings used in production of motor vehicles and other durable goods, as well as industrial maintenance applications. Solvent-based paint and coatings are expected to decline in both developed and developing markets, as ongoing efforts to reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) are spurring the rise of alternative formulations.
