Ferrous scrap rate for Japanese converter steel exceeded 10 percent in 2003 for the first time since 1979. Scrap consumption for converter steel increased by 1.56 million tonnes to 9.04 million tonnes in the year from previous year, increasing scrap ratio by 1.4 percentage points to 10.1 percent when converter raw steel output increased by 2.82 million tonnes to 81.35 million tonnes, according to Japan Ferrous Raw Materials Association. Integrated steel makers was said to increase raw steel output with more scrap to meet increasing demand for automobile, shipbuilding and Asian export.
