The Specialty Metals Processing Consortium hassucceeded in the effective development and transfer oftechnology to production facilities through industrialexperiments and laboratory-scale experiments at SandiaNational Laboratories. These experiments have helped verifymodels, determine boundary conditions, and evaluate newcontrol systems. In this article, a description of the consortium isprovided, and examples are given on how resulting technologyhas been applied by industrial members. Examples focus on theapplication of models and controls. Several unique features ofthe consortium are presented such as the fundamentalunderstanding that is gained from industrial experiments.
