This volume provides a refreshing look at the science and technology of sintering for a wide range of materials. While most books on the topic dwell on the science and theory behind sintering with only a limited number of practical industrial examples, Upadhyaya does just the opposite. This book spends only one chapter on the theory and the rest of the 670 pages are devoted to how the science of sintering is applied to numerous metallic and ceramic materials. Chapter topics include high-and low-alloy ferrous materials, copper alloys, aluminum alloys, nickel alloys, titanium and zirconium alloys, silver and lead alloys, tungsten and molybdenum alloys, as well as oxide and non-oxide ceramics, cermets and intermetallics.Each chapter is broken down into three main sections: how the powder is produced; how the powder is most routinely consolidated and sintered; and the resulting properties of the consolidated material. The extensive use of phase diagrams as well as plots of material properties versus relative density allows an engineer to easily extrapolate processing conditions and properties for alloy compositions not explicitly mentioned in the book. The largest chapter, which deals with low-alloy ferrous materials, outlines many of the details surrounding ternary and quarternary alloys as well as the effects of varying carbon content.
