The Specialty Metals Processing Consortium has succeeded in the effective development and transfer of technology to production facilities through industrial experiments and laboratory-scale experiments at Sandia National Laboratories. Theseexperiments have helped verify models, determine boundary conditions, and evaluate new control systems. In this article, a description of the consortium is provided, and examples are given on how resulting technology has been applied by industrialmembers. Examples focus on the application of models and controls. Several unique features of the consortium are presented, such as the fundamental understanding that is gained from industrial experiments.
