What is the evidence for the effectiveness of glycaemic control regimens in the peri-operative period on the prevention of surgical site infections (SSI) in adults? Cochrane quantitative review without meta-analysis. Surgical site infections are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, prolonged stay in hospital and increased resource use, resulting in considerable financial burden to healthcare providers. Most SSI affect only the skin, with some serious infections affecting the deeper soft tissues under the skin. SSI also include infections of body cavities or organs affected by surgical procedures.
