Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Mdh-1 (a malate dehydrogenase allele) isoenzyme frequencies were determined for 19 feral colonies of A. mellifera in Tillman and Jackson counties, Oklahoma, USA, in June 2006. One bee representing each colony was analysed to determine the mtDNA haplotype. Of the feral colonies sampled, 6 had European mtDNA haplotypes, whereas 13 had African mtDNA haplotypes. Allelic frequencies for Mdh-1 isoenzymes in colonies with European mtDNA were 0.528 for Mdh-1100, 0.121 for Mdh-180, and 0.351 for Mdh-165; for colonies with African mtDNA, the corresponding values were 0.621, 0.195 and 0.183..
