By the example of an axisymmetric problem of intense deformation of a cylindrical nonlinear elastic layer under the action of load on its outer boundary, the efficiency is demonstrated of a variant of the ray method developed specifically for the waves with strong discontinuities (shock waves). Several initial stages of the wave process are considered; namely, the movement of the created shock waves toward the inner boundary of the layer, the reflection of the faster wave from the inner boundary, as well as the interaction between the slow shock wave and the reflected shock wave with the formation of a new wave pattern. For each of the deformation stages, the solution is constructed by a modified method of ray series.
