Effect of Pt addition on the crystallization of Co-based amorphous metallic alloys

Amorphous metallic alloys, Co_(73)Pt_5B_(10)Si_(12) and Co_(63)Pt_(15)B_(10)Si_(12), were thermally annealed to study the effects of Pt on the annealed microstructure and resulting magnetic properties of the two glasses. The Co-Pt metallic glasses were fully crystallized between 500 and 600 deg C with increasing amount of Pt addition proportionally lowering the devitrification temperature. In addition, Pt addition favored the nucleation of the h.c.p. phase which converted to the f.c.c. phase as the annealing temperature was increased, whereas the Pt-free Co_(78)B_(10)Si_(12) glass crystallized into the f.c.c. structure from the beginning. The crystallized Co-Pt alloys also showed high coercivities resulting from the relatively small grain size and numerous structural defects providing the domain wall pinning sites. It was also shown that Pt atoms in the crystallized alloy suppressed the precipitation of secondary phases as the expanded crystalline lattice due to the Pt addition enabled better accommodation of the metalloid elements.
