Measurement of damping performance of M2052 alloy at cryogenic temperatures

We have measured the mechanical property of a damping alloy, called M2052, which is the manganese-based alloy containing copper, nickel and iron. We used a cantilever made of M2052; its resonant frequency and internal friction were measured as a function of temperature from 4.2 K to room temperature. We found that the high internal friction at room temperatures was depressed at about 150 K, where anomalous behavior of the resonant frequency was observed. At lower temperatures, its internal friction recovered and formed a broad peak around 70 K. In order to evaluate the non-linearity of M2052, we also measured amplitude dependency of the damping performance. The applicability of M2052 to the damping system of cryogenic measurements is discussed.
