The hydrogenation properties of TiFe partiallysubstituted with a small amount of Ni, Co, or Al for Fe werestudied. Complete solid solutions were observed for allcompositions, but different characteristics of the pressure-composition-temperature (P-C-T) curves were observed. For Ni-and Co-substituted alloys, the shape of the P-C-T curves and thehydrogen storage capacities were very similar to those of pureTiFe. The plateau pressures in the two-phase (α-β) region alwaysremained flat, but decreased drastically as the amount of nickel orcobalt was increased. The different hydrogenation behaviors areexplained on the basis of different values of hydride formationenthalpies of TiFe, TiNi, and TiCo. When Fe was partiallyreplaced by Al, a solid solution was also formed, but the sizes ofthe octahedral sites were changed. The hydrogen storage capacitywas decreased and the slope of the plateau pressure increased asthe amount of aluminum increased. The change of slope of theplateau pressure is explained and modeled by the various sizes ofthe octahedral sites.
