Metastable phase formation by chemical leaching of Al-Co-Cu ternary alloys

The formation of a metastable nanocrystalline Co-Cu alloy was attempted by means of chemical leaching of Alatoms from various ternary Al-Co-Cu alloys prepared by rapidsolidification or mechanical alloying. Almost all Al atmos wereremoved by the chemical leaching and fine particles of asupersaturated metastable Co-Cu solid solution were formed bychanging the chemical composition and the crystallographicstructure from the original one to fcc. Most of the particle sizeswere below one hundred nanometer. A few nanometer sizeparticles were also observed by TEM observation. Thesupersaturated solid solution decomposed into Co and Cu phasesafter a heat treatment. The variation of the saturationmagnetization of the leached specimens gradually decreased withincreasing temperature. After reaching a minimum, the saturationmagnetization increased and approached that normal value of fccCo. This variation was the result of the precipitation of Co fromthe supersaturated fcc phase. The DSC curves also showed anexothermic peak indicative of Co precipitation andcorresponding to the variation of the saturation magnetizationwith temperature. Precipitation was also confirmed by X-raydiffraction. It was concluded that the chemical leaching processmight open the possibility to form new metastable materials.
