摘要

Twenty two cowpea genotypes were studied for characterization using chemical tests which includes KOH-bleach test, phenol test modified test, ferrous sulphate test and sodium hydroxide test. On the basis of analysis of genotypes to chemical reactionsthe genotypes can be identified quickly and the results are reproducible. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) is among the important pulse crops of India. It is one of the major grain legumes in the third world and provides major portion of dietary protein for the people. Genetic purity is one of the most important attribute of seed to raise a good crop. For varietal identification descriptors are used. The descriptors currently available are restricted to morphological characters. Many morphologicaldescriptors used are polygenic inherited, time consuming. So, the chemical tests can be used as they are quick and reproducible. Thus, the present study aims at varietal identification of 22 cowpea genotypes using chemical tests.
