The native range of the white-eyed bream Ballerus sapa (Pallas 1811) comprises large rivers of the Black, Azov, Caspian and Aral seas (Terlecki, 2000; Kottelat and Freyhof, 2007). At present, it also occurs in the Baltic, North and White Sea basins. History of its dispersal into these areas began in 1860, when the white-eyed bream spread from the Volga River to the Volkhov River (Sabaneyev, 1993) as a result of the construction of a series of canals from the Volga to the Baltic. As a result, it now inhabits Lake Ladoga (Kudersky et al., 1996). Ballerus sapa has also colonized in the Bug, Narew and Vistula rivers by self-dispersal in the 1980s and the 1990s (Terlecki, 1990; Kakareko et al., 2008). It was ?rst noted in the White Sea basin (Vychegda River) in the 1970s (Solovkina, 1975), and is common in the Northern Dvina River since the 1990s (Novoselov and Studenov, 2002). In the North Sea basin it has also been observed in the Rhine River since 1996. It is hypothesized that this was most likely due to accidental stocking of the Danube River and subsequent movement via the Rhein-Main-Danube Canal (Bischo? et al., 1998; Freyhof, 2003).
