摘要

This paper contextualizes the discourses of “foodsecurity” and “food sovereignty” within the historyof the global industrial food system and aims toincrease understanding of these differentdiscourses among food activists, and food justiceactivists in particular. The paper highlights some ofthe epistemological, methodological, and ethicalchallenges of defining, measuring, and alleviatingfood insecurity, using the U.S. as a case study. Assuggested in the conclusion, social scientists mustcontinue to engage with activists and throughcampus-community partnerships to help decipherthe trade-offs and implications of employingdifferent discursive frameworks.
