The developments in molecular biology in the mid-seventies that led to the emergence of biotechnology also led to the growth of the field of bioinformatics. Although bioinformatics originally (as introduced by Paulien Hoogeweg in 1978) encompassed “the study of information processing in biotic systems” in general, with the development of high-throughput technologies such as microarrays and various chips in the “omics” sciences, it has become more focused and specialized on the creation and advancement of databases, algorithms, computational and statistical techniques, and theoretical studies to solve formal and practical problems arising from the management and analysis of biological data. The field of systems biology was conceived as “the application of systems theory to biology” in the 1960s by Mesarovi′c (1968), based on earlier ideas of Lotka (1924), von Bertalanffy (1940), and others. While biological systems theory largely remained in the shadow of molecular biology, it began its amazingly steep rise to prominence at the turn of the 21st Century when it became an important paradigm for interpreting the newly available large-scale data that were being generated at various levels of biological systems. Systems biology strives to integrate computational and experimental approaches to model and understand the structure and dynamics of biological systems.
